Moving abroad to study is invariably a challenging moment in our lives, full of defiances and discoveries. Cultural differences, language barriers, missing family and friends (to name a few), are waiting for us on this rich journey. But how about looking for new hobbies and activities we have never done in our country? It can be an excellent decision to make our lives overseas even more enjoyable.

Many hobbies we have are related to our culture and customs. The environment where we live, to a certain extent, drives our pastimes. When we move to a different country, new possibilities appear, and it is a perfect time to experience something new, different from what we have done until now. How about cooking, dancing, gardening, playing some sports, taking part in a local cultural group? I bet there is a new hobby waiting for you just around the corner.

I am a big fan of outside activities. I mean, physical activities. I used to go jogging at least twice a week in my home country, but I never went cycling there. When I moved to Germany, I observed people here cycle a lot; almost everyone is cycling here. Following the saying “when in Rome, do as the Romans do”, I decided to buy a second-hand bike and start cycling. It was an excellent decision, a good way to feel more integrated into the local customs.

Since then, I have visited many small villages and seen incredible landscapes around the town where I live: Pfarrkirchen. There are many bike paths around and an excellent infrastructure for cycling. Most importantly, it is a safe activity in many ways. Here, drivers take care of people who ride their bicycles, and you can feel safe, even when cycling on the road.

So, get the hint. Cycling is an excellent activity to do during your study period in Germany. It is a perfect opportunity to meet people, make friends and feel like a local. Besides, you know the surroundings, exercise and you also get some fresh air. Let’s cycle!
