Analysing Movement Patterns from Smartphones for the Training of Exoskeletons

pg. 472-475.

  • (2022)

DOI: 10.1109/ACIT54803.2022.9913186

In this paper, an approach to motion analysis that combines two different machine learning techniques, using a single smartphone inside a trouser pocket to record data, is proposed. The resulting program shall be used for data analysis during the use of an exoskeleton and for tracking movements of the lower extremities. The project focuses on the question of whether acceleration data from a smartphone are sufficient to make accurate predictions of movements. A Convolutional Neural Network is used for motion recognition and an agglomerative clustering algorithm is used for a further, more precise analysis of individual movement types. An overall concept and preliminary results of this project are discussed in this work.

A framework for regional smart energy planning using volunteered geographic information

In: Advances in Geosciences vol. 54 pg. 179-193.

  • (2020)

DOI: 10.5194/adgeo-54-179-2020

This study presents a framework for regional smart energy planning for the optimal location and sizing of small hybrid systems. By using an optimization model – in combination with weather data – various local energy systems are simulated using the Calliope and PyPSA energy system simulation tools. The optimization and simulation models are fed with GIS data from different volunteered geographic information projects, including OpenStreetMap. These allow automatic allocation of specific demand profiles to diverse OpenStreetMap building categories. Moreover, based on the characteristics of the OpenStreetMap data, a set of possible distributed energy resources, including renewables and fossil-fueled generators, is defined for each building category. The optimization model can be applied for a set of scenarios based on different assumptions on electricity prices and technologies. Moreover, to assess the impact of the scenarios on the current distribution infrastructure, a simulation model of the low- and medium-voltage network is conducted. Finally, to facilitate their dissemination, the results of the simulation are stored in a PostgreSQL database, before they are delivered by a RESTful Laravel Server and displayed in an angular web application.

Sustainable Peer-to-Peer Energy Trading Principles and Smart Meter Requirements for Smart Grids

In: Bavarian Journal of Applied Sciences vol. 5 pg. 461-475.

  • (2019)

DOI: 10.25929/bjas.v5i1.66

The sustainability and efficiency of the current and future power grid is an important topic nowadays. Thus, the increasing usage of renewable energy sources for generation of electricity requires a more complex infrastructure to manage generation and demand efficiently. In order to stabilize a power grid there are different methods to trade energy sources. Especially for smart grid infrastructures, the most interesting approach is to trade energy peer-to-peer. Thus, we consider different peer-to-peer principles in detail. Particularly, the underlying subsystem is essential for fast and accurate trading. That is why smart meters, forming the lowest layer of the system, are one of the most important parts within the grid infrastructure. Their main task is to provide high quality information and services for smart contracting and also for controlling the power grid with regard to efficiency and sustainability. The information provided by smart meters can also be used within a smart energy management to optimize production and consumption times. This demand side management approach helps to prevent overproduction and hence leads to more sustainablitiy in future decentralized power grids. For this purpose, peer-to-peer methods and smart meters have to fulfil dedicated requirements which are considered here in more detail.
