Drone Classification with a Convolutional Neural Network Applied to Raw IQ Data

  • (2022)

DOI: 10.23919/AT-AP-RASC54737.2022.9814170

With the increasing popularity of civilian drones, the need for technical detection and classification systems rises. In this paper a machine learning based approach for detection and classification of radio frequency signals from drones is proposed. As data source the DroneDetect_V2 data set is used. The raw IQ data is processed by a convolutional neural network, without the need for much pre-processeing or any feature engineering. With this approach an accuracy of 99 % for detection and between 72 % and 94 % for classifi-cation is reached.

Concept for a Short-Range Fallback Communication System for Drones in Medical Applications

  • (2022)

DOI: 10.23919/AT-AP-RASC54737.2022.9814169

Goal of the research project KIMoNo is the implementation of a drone based delivery system for medical products and samples. To ensure the communication between drone and a ground team even in remote areas, a fallback communication system is required. In this paper a brief overview of communication systems for drones is presented and a concept for the fallback communication system is proposed.

Comparison of Machine Learning and Rule-based Approaches for an Optical Fall Detection System

  • (2022)

DOI: 10.1109/CIVEMSA53371.2022.9853711

A major challenge caused by the aging of the modern society is the home care of elderly people. Many elders prefer staying in their own home over moving into a nursing home for as long as possible. For this reason, the project DeinHaus 4.0 Lower Bavaria researches possible technical solutions which can help the elderly to live in their own homes for a longer period of time. The topic of falls is one main part of the research because the number of falls and thereby caused injuries increase with rising age. In this context, this work presents a prototype for an optical fall detection system based on pose estimation, running in real time on an embedded device connected to a USB-camera. In the process of development, different approaches including machine and deep learning, as well as a rule-based algorithm are applied to solve this task. All methods reach an accuracy higher than 94 % when used on publicly available data sets, but machine learning seems to have drawbacks when applied in the real-time application due to limitations in the available training data. The rule-based approach, on the other hand, seems to be more capable of generalizing different types of fall events.

With the rising number of drones, the lower air space is getting ever more crowded and serious safety issues arise, as long as drone traffic remains unregulated. In this paper conceptional considerations for a geo-awareness system for civilian drones are presented. Hereby, a special focus is laid on those types of drones, which are typically used for recreational purposes by inexperienced pilots.

Concept for a Software Defined Radio Based System for Detection, Classification and Analysis of Radio Signals from Civilian Unmanned Aerial Systems

  • (2018)

DOI: 10.23919/URSI-AT-RASC.2018.8471398

The recent advances in the field of civilian Unmanned Aerial Systems have enabled a wide range of applications and facilitated their wide spread use. However, these systems can also pose a threat to the civilian population. As part of a research project to counter these threats, a Software Defined Radio based system for detection, classification and analysis of radio signals from civilan drones is proposed in this paper. A short look at related work, focusing on the application of machine learning techniques for the classification of radio signals is presented and a concept for the implementation of detection and classification system is proposed.

Comparison of Software Defined Radio Techniques and Smart Metering Devices for Predictive Maintenance Applications

  • (2018)

DOI: 10.23919/URSI-AT-RASC.2018.8471357

The paper compares two approaches for generating input data for Predictive Maintenance systems. Smart meters are commonly used in industrial applications and could also be used for adopting Predictive Maintenance. The second approach uses Software Defined Radios outside of their traditional application field, because of their high flexibility. The existing Software Defined Radio tool chains for signal processing can be easily adopted to generate and process input data for Predictive Maintenance algorithms. Besides the theoretical comparison and discussion of these two approaches, a concept for the practical evaluation is presented.
