Thomas Erndl, Member of the Bundestag, provided fascinating insights into the current state of defence policy at the Gründungsstammtisch. In cooperation with ITC1, the Centre for Entrepreneurship of the Deggendorf Institute of Technology (DIT) organised the Gründungsstammtisch under the title "Defence Tech – Wissenswertes und Chancen für Startups und KMUs" on 30 June. Around 75 guests – including Thomas Erndl, a member of the Bundestag – attended the event at the ITC1 startup centre to discuss the potential of security-related technologies.
The guests were welcomed by Prof. Dr. Veronika Fetzer, DIT-Vice-President Third Mission and director of the ITC GmbH, and Thomas Keller, director of the ITC GmbH. Afterwards, Thomas Erndl, spokesperson on defence policy of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, provided a thorough insight into the current and future significance of defence policy. Germany faces a wide range of security challenges – from geopolitical conflicts and hybrid threats to rapid technological change. According to Erndl, innovation is therefore needed now more than ever to effectively address these challenges. Formats such as the Gründungsstammtisch are particularly valuable, as they promote dialogue between the worlds of politics, business and innovative start-ups, thereby providing new impetus for the defence sector.
After that, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Dorner, DIT-Vice-President Research and Transfer, highlightet in his presentation "Innovationen auf dem Gefechtsfeld" the opportunities and challenges the defence sector presents for startups and young companies. He made it clear that defence technology extends far beyond traditional weapon systems and offers numerous points of engagement for companies – for example, in future technologies and in areas such as logistics, supply chain management and maintenance. He also pointed out that entering the sector does not necessarily have to be via the Bundeswehr or the procurement system, but is often achieved through innovation hubs, specialised partners or suppliers.
Following the presentations, the guests’ keen interest was also evident in a very lively discussion with the audience. Many participants took the opportunity to explore specific points in greater depth, share their own experiences and engage in a dialogue with the speakers.
